Our Commercials adult teams had a very busy weekend and experienced contrasting fortunes across three championship grades over the weekend, with an emphatic senior victory offset by defeats for the intermediate and Junior B sides.
The senior team produced the standout performance on Saturday, defeating Ballina 1-20 to 0-11 in round two of the FBD Insurance Tipperary Senior Football Championship. Commercials made a strong start, scoring four points inside six minutes before Seán O’Connor’s 17th-minute goal put daylight between the teams. Ballina battled back to trail by three at the interval, 1-07 to 0-07.
Ballina opened the scoring in the second half, but Commercials dominated the half, retaining over 80% of their own kick-outs while also winning the majority of Ballina’s. Seanie O’Connor led nine different scorers with 1-04, while Peter McGarry and Cian Smith contributed 0-04 each. That 12-point success leaves Commercials alone at the top of Group 1 with four points from two games.
Sunday brought a more difficult brace of matches. In the Intermediate Championship at Monroe, Commercials were beaten 2-13 to 1-03 by Killenaule, who now lead Division 2 with maximum points. Commercials remain third on two points, level with Moyne/Templetuohy, ahead of the final round.
Later at Marlfield, the Junior B campaign ended at the quarterfinal stage as Ardfinnan prevailed 3-16 to 2-11. Commercials stayed in touch with two goals, but Ardfinnan’s heavier points return and two late goals carried them through.
It was therefore a weekend of sharp contrasts: a senior side building real momentum and taking firm control of its group, the intermediates with a lot still to play for in the group but disappointment for the Junior B development team for 2026.
